The Open Space team at the City of Port Phillip focussed on Crichton Reserve for a makeover. Instead of telling the community what they’d be getting, the team went out of their way to encourage local residents to give their feedback.
Have your say on the playground upgrade
At Stage One of the consultation, the City Of Port Phillip received feedback on their proposed plan to help them deliver a project that would give local residents what they wanted.
The main things raised were:
- Retain a large grassed area for free play
- Plants and trees retained for natural play
- Provide fences for a safe play area, and place exercise equipment where it’s visually accessible for supervising adults
- Add facilities for all – accessible and inclusive space with paths, BBQ and picnic facilities
Community feedback on the concept design
The a_space Explorer Climbing Net was chosen for the concept design of this park.
Our nets are proudly designed and manufactured in Australia. a_space is one of only a few companies who make everything we install right here – which means that our safety and quality standards are ones you can trust.
We also offer industry-leading lead times. We source most of our materials locally and manufacture in-house – so our supply-chain runs smoothly to deliver successful projects on time and on budget.

Explorer Nets in the final design
The inclusion of a_space product in this location has been a great way to break up the products. Our nets provide activities that cater to a broad age range.
As you can see in some of the images captured, nets are a great way of introducing younger children to problem-solving, abstract thinking and developing coordination and strength.
The use of steel in a_space products is very much a considered choice. Particularly in locations near the sea, a_space think carefully about the appropriate materials. Steel is strong, locally available, sturdy and safe.
a_space offer a Marine Grade standard on most of our equipment, to ensure that our playgrounds and outdoor gyms stand the test of time. Steel is also a great way of making a pocket park ‘pop’. The unique, industrial aesthetic stands out amongst a natural environment. Climbing nets also add a sensory aspect to a playground.
a_space design equipment with input from exercise physiologists and consult paediatric occupational therapists. We are proud to offer activities that can be used to overcome some developmental delays.
