Designing playgrounds for special schools is quite unique, particularly when considering secondary school students. We recently installed a playground at Yarrabah Special School for students aged between 13-18 years. Part of the brief for this project was that the equipment was to be aesthetically appealing to older age groups. It was also important that the equipment offered students an adequate physical challenge.
Our design team created the playground configuration illustrated below to meet the needs of the school. From left to right it features: curved roman rings, a spiderweb, a double-sided rock climbing wall, twister net and worm climber.
The playground complements a fitness track and is used every morning as part of a 20-30 minute exercise circuit.
“The exercise program has been fantastic for the students as it gets them out and moving first thing in the morning. It has resulted in big improvements to their focus during class”
Sophia Adamis – Assistant Principal at Yarrabah Special School, Aspendale
The spiderweb is a favourite with many of the students and the twister net has proven to be very beneficial for children with problem behaviours as it provides them with a sense of achievement. Both parents and students love the new playground and it’s proven to be a huge success with the school community as a whole.”
