A comprehensive Request for Proposal was provided by the customer outlining project requirements and deliverables. Consultations were held with the school’s Leadership Team to discuss and agree the brief and also with student representatives to get their input on the overall design philosophy. A budget figure was then agreed between a_space and customer to enable a design concept to be prepared.
A collaborative design process was undertaken that included input from a large number of a_space’s design team. A Spire Tower was custom-designed to suit the space and also to incorporate a new Activity Cube and see-through tubes on the slides along with three spinning items. A linear obstacle course was designed to suit a long, skinny space with a variety of challenging events. Amazing wetpour rubber designs were included as part of the design concepts for the two areas. A Twirly Whirly Zone was included with a climbing wall and multiple bars. There is also a nature play area using large timber logs and existing infrastructure and STEM boards for interactive and educational play.
The two standout features of the project are the obstacle course and the tower. The obstacle course makes use of what was an abandoned area and now provides a vibrant, engaging and challenging space where the students can test their physical abilities. The tower is the centrepiece and standout feature, being in the middle of the school buildings and near the location where students’ parents drop off and collect their children. With an amazing and diverse range of play opportunities, the students will have plenty of diversity in the fantastic new play tower!
