Glen Waverley Primary School – VIC

Our challenge was to maximise playground value in the limited space working inside the constraints of an existing shade sail structure. While our quality and service was well known by this school from the delivery of past projects, we were advised this time the decision would be placed in the hands of the students. A number of playground companies were invited to present designs and the students would vote for the one they wanted. We really needed to impress to win the popular vote!

A unique design was developed incorporating numerous tunnels and tube slides to enable maximum play value in the limited space. The tubes and tunnels were configured in a way that looked like the tentacles of an octopus. A sphere was added to represent the head of the Octopus completing the theme. Through the process the a_space design team decided to name the playground. ‘Glen the Octopus’ was born giving the playground a relatable and fun character.

Glen the Octopus is a stunning, exciting and challenging new playspace that the kids are enjoying immensely. It has been so popular that in the first few weeks following the opening the school had to implement a roster so that all the students could enjoy the playground. Apart from the students, the school staff are thrilled with the outcome.

We are so thrilled that a_space did our school playground. Blackheath School P&C raised enough money to put in play equipment and a_space were really thoughtful and sensitive to our budget. The design, landscaping, project management and installation team were completely professional and approachable through every stage of the process. The children at Blackheath Public School are absolutely thrilled with their new equipment – the teachers can’t keep them off it.

“This project was excellent, ran smoothly, was well coordinated and completed ahead of schedule. A new rubber surface, some new equipment and shade installation has given this playground a great face lift and an extended life”
